ChatGPT is a frequent topic in the news these days. That’s not surprising since it is so far the fastest-growing app of all time. What is it, how can you use it and are there concerns?
What is a Chatbot?
First, let’s start with what a chatbot is – a software application that can conduct an online conversation that imitates that of a live human on the other end. ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by a company called OpenAI and launched on November 30, 2022. It has been refined to the point that it answers questions in a very human-like way. Answers can be informal and even humorous, but also disturbing. The disturbing part arises from biases that can come from the data sources used to provide answers, as well as from the developers behind the artificial intelligence (AI) software.
ChatGPT Limitations
Besides certain biases, this chatbot has other limitations which can include providing incorrect information and harmful instructions. Furthermore, it’s knowledge of events and the world after 2021 is limited.
ChatGPT Uses
ChatGTP is built to answer questions as well as help with functions such as creating written material and even code. It’s meant to make life easier. One example of its use is to summarize a long and/or complicated body of text. Here are step-by-step instructions to perform this task.
ChatGPT Affect on Jobs
Some predict that AI in general will start to steal jobs from post-secondary educated workers in the next five years. The technology will be capable of doing work that used to require a human with a higher level of skill and education. Cost-cutting through AI-powered automated systems could affect certain types of well-educated workers. It will be important, therefore, for workers to be alert to how their abilities can be adapted for the coming world of AI-powered advanced tasks.
OpenAI Company
OpenAI has also launched DALL-E-2, which will generate art using AI, as well as Whisper, which is a speech recognition system.
Since ChatGPT is still in the research stage, it is currently free to use, however, there is a paid version called ChatGPT Plus. To get started using this chatbot, visit chat.openai.com and create an account.
