Casa Loma is a historic estate in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The estate was built in the early 1900s by the Eaton family of the Eaton’s department store dynasty. It is now a distinguished hotel and luxury resort, operated by the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. The castle-like house is surrounded by a formal garden, and is located at the foot of the escarpment in the city’s core. It is one of Toronto’s most notable landmarks and one of Toronto’s top attractions. It is listed as a heritage property by the City of Toronto and is a member of the Historic Hotels of Canada. Casa Loma offers visitors the experience of a bygone era, with a variety of amenities including a spa, indoor pool and fitness center. It is also a popular wedding venue. The hotel’s restaurant, “The Library”, gained a Michelin star, and offers fine dining with a gourmet twist. In addition to its luxurious guest rooms, the hotel offers suites, villas and cottages for rent.

The Castle

Casa Loma’s main structure is a castle-like house that sits on a hill above the city of Toronto. The house was built in the Tudor Revival style, and has a round turret on each corner. The turret on the east corner of the house is the tallest, and is decorated with finials on top. The house is surrounded by a formal garden, and is located at the foot of the escarpment in the city’s core.  It was Eaton’s wish to build a castle that bore a resemblance to the city of Madrid. The architecture of Casa Loma is reminiscent of Spanish architecture, with towers and turrets that reflect the style of castles from the region. Casa Loma is built from limestone quarried near Kincardine, and the walls are covered with murals depicting the history of the Eaton family.

The Gardens

The gardens surrounding Casa Loma were designed by William Beatty Eaton. Beatty Eaton was a member of William Henry Morton Eaton’s family, and was also trained as a horticulturist. The gardens are a rare example of Spanish Revival architecture in Canada, and include a variety of rare, historical, and exotic plants.
