Unified Communications Makes Life Easier
Are you wondering what Unified Communications is? It is a term you may be hearing more about, but it isn’t necessarily all that easy to pin down. There isn’t a universally understood product known as Unified Communications. One way to begin to get a handle on Unified Communications is to understand the problems it is trying to fix. Do you ever get frustrated trying to deal with the multiple tools we use to communicate in the workplace now? It seems like there are just too many ways we are expected to keep in touch with colleagues, customers, and family. Sometimes it is hard to remember exactly where you last had contact with someone. “Did they send me that info in an email …or was it a text?” You have to search that person’s emails and texts until you find what is needed. And how about when you are texting or emailing with a colleague who is in a meeting and cannot talk? Now you have to stop communicating because you have to drive to an event and that freezes the exchange until you arrive. The constant interruptive nature of our communications is not productive and, honestly, it is just plain annoying. It all gets to be too much. Is there some way to break down all these communication silos?
Yes. There is the developing solution that is known as Unified Communications. Incrementally, since the arrival of voice-over-IP technology (VoIP), we have been moving further toward tearing down these information silos and unifying our communication channels so we can freely move from one tool to the next. That is the basic goal of a Unified Communications.
