Netflix has become a high-profile target for cybercriminals as it has a large subscription base of 93 million users around the world. These cybercriminals often attempt to monetize Netflix accounts that they have hacked by selling them on the Internet, or stealing the users’ financial and personal information.

Recently, people have been downloading a new app called “Netflix Login Generator” in order to gain free access to Netflix accounts. However, these users are actually downloading a ransomware called “Netix” which encrypts users’ data and demands $100 in bitcoins to unlock their data.

The ransomware targets Windows 7 and Windows 10 computers where it runs as a fraudulent login generator. The login generator has prompts and windows to appear like a genuine program, but in reality, this is to distract the user while it encrypts files in the background.

This ransomware is another reminder to not let social engineering tricks manipulate you into downloading files or software that are not trustworthy.
