5 AI Prompts to Try First

5 Prompts to Try

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the business world, offering tools that can streamline operations, enhance customer engagement, and drive growth. But many people have still never used any AI platform and may be unsure how or where to start. Here are 5 prompts that you can try if you’ve never used AI before and want to see what all the fuss is about.

Prompts are the main way you interact with AI platforms like Copilot–Microsoft’s AI product. Just like you would with a text message, you type your prompt into the prompt field, and Copilot will send you back a response.

If you want to try any of these prompts, go to: microsoft365.com/chat and sign in.

1. Write a poem

Example prompt: “write a poem about my cat George who is fat”
This may seem like a silly thing to do as it will probably never come up in a business context. But if you’ve never used Copilot or AI, this simple request can give you a sense of how quickly and coherently Copilot can respond. Copilot will bring the same abilities to writing a poem as it will to drafting a social media content, writing a letter, or creating a blog post.

2. Change the tone of a message

Example prompt (in the same chat as your poem): “That’s a great poem, but I’d like it to be more somber”
You can use Copilot to tweak content to get the tone and style closer to what you want. You can do this with text you’ve already developed outside of Copilot or from a prompt you just entered. This can be a powerful tool if you need to hit a more formal tone than you’re used to writing in.

3. Summarize an Article

Example prompt: “summarize this article into 5 key points: www.bscsg.com/ai-your-staff-are-probably-already-using-it/”
Summary is one of the most useful and time-saving features of Copilot. When you ask Copilot to summarize an article it can take the key points and put it into a quick, digestible format. More advanced versions of Copilot can summarize your emails and even take nearly-instant summary meeting notes for Teams meetings. These summaries are a great way to boil down your business communications to the essentials and save time.

4. Create a To-Do List

Example prompt: “Create a to-do list for my Saturday.”
Copilot is great at breaking big things down into smaller, more manageable chunks. If you use the exact prompt in the example above, you’ll likely see something fairly generic. But you’ll also see that it has broken up a day into smaller sections. Try adding some follow up prompts that get more specific about your day. The more detail you add, the more specific the results will be to you. In more advanced versions, Copilot can pull events from your calendar and tasks that you have to complete to create custom to-do lists to fit your day.

5. Translate a Message

Example prompt: “Translate this message: J’apprends quelque chose de nouveau aujourd’hui”
Depending on your organization, translation to another language may not be something that comes up that often. But Copilot is a great tool when it comes to translation. You may not want to go straight to the printers without having someone verify what Copilot translated. But if you want to understand something in another language, Copilot can quickly help you get the meaning on foreign text. It can also translate things from English to other languages. Try translating your poem from earlier into Spanish and see what the results are.

These prompts are just the beginning of what you can do with a free Copilot account. If you have a paid Copilot account, you can take a look at some more advanced prompts. The more you experiment with Copilot, the more ways you will find to work it’s abilities into your day-to-day tasks.
